Maths and English Tuition at Southampton Shirley

Welcome to the Southampton Shirley First Class Learning Centre! Our welcoming tuition centre is located at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College on Hill Lane, surrounded by a wonderful learning environment.

We offer effective learning programmes aligned with the National Curriculum, designed for learners aged 4 to 16.

Before joining, every student takes part in a free maths and English assessment with our Centre Manager, who is fully qualified and experienced teacher. Following the assessment, we provide detailed feedback and develop a personalised learning programme tailored to your child’s specific learning needs.

Our Centre Manager in Southampton Shirley works closely with their team to guide and support your child’s progress in maths, English and Science. Our aim is to strengthen confidence, improve understanding, and encourage the development of independent learning skills.

We also provide specialised packages for students preparing for Phonics Screening test, SATs, and GCSEs. These programmes include practice using relevant past and mock exam papers to help build exam skills and confidence.

How we work

We begin with our unique Skills Assessment, which takes place at the centre. This assessment helps identify both your child’s strengths and the areas where they may need additional support. Based on the results, we create a personalised learning programme tailored specifically to your child. Our maths, English, and science learning pathways are aligned with the National Curriculum and are carefully structured to build skills step by step. This structured approach is what makes First Class Learning so effective, helping students grasp concepts that may previously have been challenging. Each week, work is carefully planned and organised, so it is clear and easy to follow. Students receive their weekly tasks at the centre, giving parents confidence that their child has a clear learning path and the support they need.

Anshu Chandpuri, BA, MEd

Centre Manager

Our Centre Manager Anshu Chandpuri is a qualified teacher who comes with a great wealth of more than 25 years of teaching experience at Private as well as State school settings. She has lived in India and Germany, and therefore has a wide variety of real-world experience, with different cultures and expectations, and uses this to better understand her students, from different cultures and backgrounds. At FCL Southampton Shirley, we aim at helping your child gain the greatest benefit from our excellent learning materials while developing confidence and a genuine love of learning. Every child learns differently and progresses at their own pace, which is why we ensure each programme is carefully tailored to meet their individual needs. Our Centre Manager personally oversees every Skills Assessment, as this step is essential to making sure the tuition programme keeps each student motivated, confident, and engaged. Every First Class Learning Centre Manager holds an enhanced DBS certificate.

Maths

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

Science

Our comprehensive science programme will develop your child's knowledge and the skills required as part of their school curriculum. The programme has a proven record for improving results and encourages enjoyment in learning.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
