Maths and English Tuition at Currie

Welcome to First Class Learning Currie Edinburgh, where we provide personalised maths and English tuition designed to help every child make clear, measurable progress. Whether your child needs extra support, a confidence boost, or greater challenge, our goal is simple: to help them improve, grow, and achieve their full potential.

For older students, this means building the skills, knowledge, and exam technique needed to perform strongly in assessments and exams. For younger learners, it’s about developing a solid foundation, strong study habits, and a positive attitude towards learning that will support them throughout their education.

Our structured programmes are fully aligned with the National Curriculum and tailored to each child’s individual needs. Using a carefully designed, worksheet-based approach, all materials are delivered using pen and paper, helping children stay focused, minimise distractions, and develop strong concentration and problem-solving skills. Students progress step by step, ensuring they fully understand each topic before moving forward.

Through our “little and often” approach, combining weekly sessions with daily practice, alongside regular assessments, we ensure consistent progress over time. Parents can be confident that their child is not only working hard, but genuinely improving in both ability and confidence.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a free assessment for your child. Once you get in touch, we will schedule a time for them to complete a short diagnostic assessment in maths and English. This allows us to understand their current level and identify any areas for development, so we can determine the best way to support their progress. Based on the assessment, we create a personalised learning plan tailored to your child’s needs. Once enrolled, your child will attend weekly sessions at the centre during our scheduled class times. During each session, they will review previous work, address any questions, and learn new concepts, while being encouraged to work independently with support from their tutor. Alongside weekly sessions, students complete short daily homework using our pen and paper materials to reinforce what they have learned. Regular assessments and ongoing feedback allow us to track progress closely and keep you informed, ensuring your child continues to improve in both ability and confidence.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
