Maths and English Tuition at Woodhouse

Welcome to Handsworth FCL in Sheffield. We support primary students up to age 12 in Maths and English, including those with specific learning difficulties in early years, primary, secondary, and A-level study skills.

Our goal is to enhance your child’s learning with personalised programmes. We start by assessing their current abilities, then address any gaps at their pace. Our sessions build knowledge, confidence, and self-esteem while aligning with the National Curriculum in a safe and supportive environment.

Our English programme covers pre-reading, reading, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, writing organisation and innovation, with a focus on comprehension and handwriting from the start. The maths programme helps children build confidence and understanding of basic number concepts according to the National Curriculum. Regular progress checks ensure children are prepared for school tests, addressing any maths anxiety or issues promptly with frequent practice. Assessment acknowledges past learning and indicates where to begin meeting any gaps. For more information or to arrange an assessment, call 07767 703 312 or email sheffieldsoutheast@firstclasslearning.co.uk

How we work

Our First Class Learning Centre Manager will call you to discuss how we can help your child with maths and English. They will then assist your child to complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable for them. Once we have established your child's needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child's learning.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
