My daughter has been going to Rachel for 3 years, and in that time has gone from pretty near the bottom of her class to No 3 in her year!! It's been an excellent way to get all the basic principles of maths totally fixed into her head. That 10 minutes of homework each day is all it takes.

Maths and English Tuition at Taunton

Welcome to the Taunton First Class Learning Maths and English Study Centre. Rachel Holdom, Centre Manager, has been running highly successful after-school maths and English classes for over 27 years (12 years Kumon).

Students of all ages attend our study centre on a Thursday for around 20-30 minutes per subject. In these sessions they will hand in their previous week of work and complete that day's worksheets which will be marked, returned and discussed with the tutor. They are then set a programme of work of 10-15 minutes per day to do at home, practising what they have learnt in the class to ensure mastery and fluency at each step.

Through our structured programmes, Rachel individualises each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding. This helps with their school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills, all of which are extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.

Our English and maths programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a convenient time for your child to complete some initial assessments. These are done via a video call. The Centre Manager, Rachel, will discuss how she can help your child with their maths or English. Once Rachel has established your child's needs, she will put together an individualised programme that will support and encourage your child's learning enabling them to gain confidence and fill in gaps that they may have. They will then be able to start attending the weekly sessions at the centre. We encourage all parents to mark the homework daily so that corrections can be made as they go through the week and their progress will be seen in the results. Rachel provides ongoing support throughout the week whenever it is needed so if they have any problems with the work, you can call her at anytime between 9:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday.

Tuition Services

Maths

Our maths programme focuses on building confidence and mastery of key topics, filling in any gaps in their knowledge that could be holding them back at school. They are able to progress beyond their school level if they are capable of doing so and the work is tailored to each individual child's needs.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

Science

This course is designed to address the requirements of KS3 Science in the National Curriculum covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Although it is aimed at students in Years 7-9, students in the upper half of primary school, who have a good level of reading comprehension, can successfully learn science with this material.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
