Maths and English Tuition at Brierley Hill

Welcome to the Brierley Hill First Class Learning Centre. We support children in the local community with maths, English and science tuition.

Through our structured programmes, we personalise each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding and promote development of existing knowledge. This helps with their schoolwork, builds confidence, and develops independent learning skills.

Our programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.

How we work

Our First Class Learning Centre Manager will call you to discuss how we can help your child with maths, English, and science. They will then assist your child to complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable for them. Once we have established your child's needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child's learning.

Simon Robbins

Centre Manager

I am Simon, and I have dedicated over 13 years to shaping the minds of young learners in primary and secondary schools. My experience as Head of Whole School Assessment, Head of Whole School Maths, and KS2 Leader has equipped me with a diverse set of teaching strategies to support students in their educational journey. I also focus on SATs preparation and 11+, as learners prepare for the secondary school academic pathway. As a current GCSE Maths Tutor for Dudley Academy Trust, I am committed to providing extra support to those who need it most. Before my teaching career, I spent a decade running a successful tennis business, where I found joy in nurturing the enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge of over 100 juniors and 200 adults as a Head Coach and Level 4 High-Performance Coach. My journey started with a BSc (honours) in Accounting from Cardiff University and led me to a fulfilling role as a stockbroker for a large American company driving a passion for learning. My zest for mathematics and problem-solving is deeply ingrained in my professional and personal pursuits, and I love supporting and challenging learners to improve.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
