FCL have personalised lesson plans for maths and English as per your child's requirements. I see positive improvements in both of my children’s writing skills and maths. I used to worry a lot about their learning but that has been taken away. Please send your children there if you want them to be confident in school and in everyday life.

Maths and English Tuition at Penicuik

Welcome to First Class Learning Penicuik, a dedicated tuition centre supporting children in maths, English, and science. We understand that every child learns at their own pace, and some may benefit from additional support outside the classroom to reinforce their understanding and build confidence. Our carefully designed programmes help children close knowledge gaps, develop strong study habits, and achieve academic success.

Fully aligned with the National Curriculum for Scotland, our approach strengthens core skills while ensuring a deep understanding of key concepts. Using a structured, worksheet-based method, students progress at their own pace with personalised guidance.

We emphasise a pen-and-paper learning approach, ensuring that children focus without screen distractions during homework and classes. Research shows that writing by hand enhances cognitive development, memory retention, and problem-solving skills, providing long-term academic benefits.

With a strong focus on consistency and steady progress, our ‘little and often’ method helps children retain knowledge effectively. Regular assessments track progress, ensuring each student advances with confidence and a solid grasp of key topics.

Our goal is to provide a supportive, engaging, and effective learning environment that empowers every child to reach their full potential.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a free assessment for your child. Once you reach out to us, we will schedule a convenient day and time. The English and maths diagnostic tests typically take around 45 minutes per subject. After the assessment, we’ll explain more about the FCL programme, including routines, costs, and feedback processes. Based on the initial assessment, we identify the best starting point to support your child’s learning and a progression path to helping them build confidence and address any gaps in their knowledge. Once enrolled, your child will attend weekly sessions at a time that works for you. Each session involves reviewing any mistakes or questions from the previous week, as well as introducing new concepts. Students are encouraged to work independently while tutors are on hand for guidance. Following the class, students complete daily homework to reinforce their learning. Regular testing throughout the year ensures students gain proficiency across various skills. We also prioritize providing personal feedback, keeping families informed about their child’s progress.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
