Mrs Patricia Newman has been an incredible support to both of my children, and I honestly couldn’t be more grateful for the impact she’s had on their learning journeys. From the moment we started with her, it was clear she’s not only passionate about teaching but also deeply professional and knowledgeable. She thoroughly understands the National Curriculum and knows precisely how to tailor her approach to suit each child’s individual needs. My eldest child worked with Patricia for just a few months, and the results were beyond what we hoped for—she achieved excellent SATs results in English comprehension and writing. My younger child, who will be moving into Year 3 this September, has been struggling with phonics. Patricia stepped in with such care and expertise, identifying the gaps and helping her build a solid foundation. Now, she fully understands her phonics, and it’s made an enormous difference in her reading and writing.

Maths and English Tuition at Grantham

Welcome to the Grantham First Class Learning Centre. We support children in the local community with Maths and English tuition.

Through our structured programmes, we personalise each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding and promote development of existing knowledge. This helps with their schoolwork, builds confidence, and develops independent learning skills.

Our programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a free assessment of your child (or children) at the Grantham Centre. The Centre Manager (Patricia Newman), or the Maths tutor (Steven Newman), will assist your child to complete the English and Maths assessment tests. Each test takes approximately 30 minutes. Following your child's assessment, we will provide a personalised learning programme for their tuition. Your child will then attend a class at the Centre once per week, on Saturdays, during the Centre's opening times. Each subject class lasts around 30 minutes. At the Centre, your child will learn and will be given work to do to consolidate what they have learnt. Between the weekly Centre visits, your child will be given a programme of daily homework tasks, to practice the skills learnt. These take approximately 10 to 15 minutes per day, and are submitted at the next class. They are marked and returned with informative feedback. We revisit and strengthen any continuing areas of weakness to ensure that vital progress is made. We will also supply handbooks, as we encourage students to mark their work. This boosts their independent skills and helps them to identify any mistakes. It is our philosophy to encourage independent working, with a tutor at hand at the Centre to help. We are committed to helping your child succeed, and we will keep you appraised of your child's progress.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
